Send Away

Create calm, thoughtful distance.

Send Away is a structured three-week online course that teaches your dog to confidently move away from you and settle on a designated target, such as a training mat, cot, or crate. Building on the skills developed in Mat Work, Heel Work, and Recall, you'll learn how to combine, adapt, and apply those foundations to help your dog work through excitement, frustration, and impulsive behavior while remaining calm, connected, and engaged.

Questions About Send Away

Send Away is about teaching your dog how to confidently create space, settle, and think through exciting or challenging situations while remaining emotionally connected with you.

Mat Work and Send Away share many of the same principles. Both teach dogs how to settle, think through challenges, and build emotional regulation. The difference is that Send Away introduces distance.

Instead of settling beside you, your dog learns to confidently move to a designated target, such as a training mat, cot, or crate, while remaining calm, connected, and engaged. As the course progresses, you'll gradually add distance, distractions, and cues like sit and down, helping your dog respond thoughtfully even when you're farther away.

Yes. Hyperactive and easily frustrated dogs often benefit from having a clear job to do when they're feeling excited or overwhelmed. Send Away teaches dogs to confidently move to a designated target, helping them slow down, settle, and make better decisions.

Yes. When taught correctly, Send Away should always feel confident, voluntary, and rewarding. For many fearful dogs, it becomes a way to move away from something that feels overwhelming and settle in a familiar, safe place where they can relax, observe, and process the situation from a distance that feels comfortable.

The goal is to give your dog a clear strategy for navigating challenging situations while building confidence, emotional regulation, and trust.

Send Away builds directly on the foundation established in Mat Work, Heel Work, and Recall. Because you're already familiar with the underlying concepts, there are fewer new exercises to learn and more emphasis on combining the skills you've already developed.

Over the three weeks, you'll learn how Send Away works alongside the rest of the program, creating practical routines that help your dog think through challenges, settle with confidence, and make better decisions in everyday life.

The goal isn't to master every environment or challenge in just three weeks. Instead, the course provides a clear framework for continuing to build these skills long after the course ends. Like the rest of the program, I encourage owners to focus on fluency first, then gradually apply the training to increasingly challenging real-world situations at their dog's pace.

Send Away is where everything begins coming together. It builds directly on the foundation established in Mat Work, Heel Work, and Recall, helping you combine and apply those skills in increasingly practical real-world situations.

  • Mat Work teaches your dog how to settle on a mat.
  • Heel Work teaches them how to stay connected while moving through the world together.
  • Recall teaches them how to leave distractions and reconnect with you.
  • Send Away teaches them how to confidently create space and settle on a designated target.

Together, these four courses create a shared language that helps your dog navigate everyday life with greater confidence, communication, and thoughtful decision-making.
