Distance in Sit, turns
If your dog is doing well with these previous steps you can start to add criteria. We are going to practice alternating between leading with your left foot and leading with your right, we can also begin making 90 or 180 degree turns. Guide your dog to place squarely, and reinforce. Make a 90-180 degree turn to the right, mark “good” if your dog has remained in position, return to your dog and reinforce. Now make a 90-180 degree turn to the left, mark “good,” return to your dog and reinforce. Repeat. Turn to your right, mark and turn back to your dog to reinforce. Turn to your left, mark and turn back to your dog to reinforce. Give a release cue and a single reward for popping out of position.
As discussed in previous exercises, if your dog pops up you are going to freeze for 3 – 5 seconds before repositioning your dog back to a sitting position and then continue with the exercise. If your dog pops up more than 2 times in a single set, this is an indication that you need to revert back to a simpler version of the same exercise.
