Distraction on Mat

In this video I am kneeling down in front of the puppy and reinforcing him for holding position on the training mat as I drop items that I do not necessarily want the puppy interacting with. I don’t personally have a problem with a puppy playing with empty toilet paper rolls, it just happened to be something I found before this training session. Also, it would have been better to train this specific behavior on a harness and leash so that when the puppy did attempt to go for the items, it would have been easier to intercept the behavior. It’s not ideal for puppies to associate your hands with a moment where they might otherwise be frustrated. This can result in frustrated biting. I recommend using a harness and leash when training.

Playing with the puppy after the set is over, and off limit items are set aside, is a great idea because it shows the puppy what items are acceptable for play!
